On April 12, 2021, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia announced that it would be upgrading its CM/ECF system (the court’s electronic filing and publicly available electronic docket system) to the “Next Generation CM/ECF” on April 19, 2021.
Commonly referenced as “NextGen,” these upgrades have already taken place in a lot of other courts around the country. Prior to these NextGen upgrades, CM/ECF users required a different sign-in username and password for each federal court in which they used such a system. NextGen includes a “central sign-on” which allows registered users to access all NextGen courts to which they already have access (including U.S. District, Bankruptcy and appellate courts) using only one PACER login and password.
