Great chemistry is for more than the movies. In this week’s edition of Your M&A and Corporate Partner, Connie Phelps covers the recent streaming deal between NBCUniversal and YouTube and discusses why the partnership was the logical next step for the entertainment giants.
Entertainment mainstay NBCUniversal recently announced a major new deal with YouTube that will soon add Peacock to YouTube Premium’s offerings.
Starting in 2027, Peacock’s vast library of shows, movies, and sporting events will be automatically added to YouTube Premium, the company’s paid, ad-free tier, at no additional cost to users. Soon, a reported 125+ million premium subscribers will see mega-hits such as Love Island USA, live sports, and Universal’s movie catalog embedded directly on their YouTube app’s home screen.
By partnering with YouTube, a company with a user-friendly app already installed on millions of phones, Peacock is set to vastly expand its audience reach without users having to download an app or create (another) new account. This ease of integration, coupled with YouTube’s preexisting audience, are set to make Peacock “one of the most broadly distributed premium streaming services in the U.S.,” maximizing its ad profitability.
In turn, YouTube is deepening its content library with legacy media and reducing the risk of losing viewers to other entertainment apps.
This newly announced partnership deepens the existing long-term distribution agreement between the two companies, recently renewed for several years in October 2025, that provided for carriage of NBCU’s networks on YouTube TV, along with movie access and an extension for Peacock’s availability on Google devices thanks to YouTube’s parent company, Alphabet Inc, but did not include Peacock in YouTube TV.
Now, it appears the second piece of the content puzzle has found its place on YouTube Premium’s home screen.
What Can Companies Learn From This?
Strategic partnerships can substantially improve business reach. In this case, Peacock’s library of content will soon be in the hands of over 125 million users without any extra effort by consumers thanks to YouTube Premium’s already pervasive use. Another factor that plays into the speed of activation for this deal is NBCU’s preexisting relationship with YouTube thanks to their live television partnership.
When searching for a potential business partner, the instinct can sometimes be to cast a wide net and work with a different company for every avenue you want to pursue. However, sometimes the best place to look can be to your existing partners, thanks to established trust and lower cost burdens for developing new ideas. Building on the companies’ existing relationship, this new deal leverages a solid foundation of shared history and creates significant additional value for both companies.
